Parks On The Air Activation

John K1JSM and Willy W1LY activated Beavertail State Park K-2868, from around noon until about 2:30 this afternoon.  The used both the 60 foot tower as well as a magnetic loop, on 17/20/40 meters.  The loop was highly directional and being off a few degrees was the difference between S1 and S9 signal levels.  The vertical also allowed them to run 100 watts and was omnidirectional, but perhaps not propagating the way they wanted.  This activation covered islands on the air, parks on the air, and lighthouses on the air, whew!

Both the Magnetic Loop as well as the vertical antenna can be seen in this photo. The Vertical is base loaded and sits on a ground field of 4″ wide copper under the grass. Of course those straps may have rotted away in the decades since the antenna was installed.

Improve your chances of receiving club email

From time to time, people mention that they aren’t receiving email from the club.  For the most part, the cox.net users are experiencing email delays that can take from a day or more to receive.  The verizon.net folks seem to do pretty well, but those using gmail can really have issues as gmail will aggressively filter anything they thing is spam to protect their users.

On way to avoid gmail filtering is to add various club email addresses to your gmail contact list.  The primary ones you might receive email from are:  info@gmail.com, treasurer@gmail.com and WB4SON@gmail.com.  If you don’t already have these addresses in your gmail contact list, please add them in.

W1LY SOTA 14.062 MHz Mt Washington

W1LY is On The Air from Mt. Washington:  SOTA W1/HA-001.  John K1JSM and Willy W1LY have driven up there this morning.  They report “Froze our a$$ off. Wind Chill in the 30’s”. You can find then on 14.062 MHz CW, a popular hang out frequency for the SOTA crowd.

Here are the details for the summit: https://summits.sota.org.uk/summit/W1/HA-001

NCRC Zoom Breakfast Meeting Thu Aug 20 @ 8 AM

Many of our members have expressed their sadness that we have put aside our weekly breakfast outings to Chelsea’s.  We want to see how it might work to have one online instead.

Please join us at 8 AM on Thursday August 20th for our first NCRC ZOOM Breakfast.  Feel free to have you breakfast with us (and you don’t have to worry about bringing enough for everyone to share).  Just casual conversation like we always had at breakfast in the past.  We may change to a later time of day (lunch/brunch/elevenses,etc) to give more folks a chance to participate in the future.

And we anticipate Richard will join us live from Chelsea’s to show us what real breakfasts can be like!

Check your email for the Zoom invitation

Join NCRC discussion group

With more than 150 members and growing, Newport County Radio Club has more resources to devote to supporting our members and hams in general in our area.

To that end, groups.io/g/W1SYE has been established.

You are encouraged to add W1SYE to your groups.  This is a moderated group, so it might take a day or so for you to be approved to join.

The intent of the group is to focus on topics of interest to club members, and in particular to new members.  The one limitation we have is very limited storage space, so we will continue to use the w1sye.org website to host large files (like videos, photos, presentations).
