Monsignor Clarke School Ready for School Club Roundup

John Z, N1JPZ, his son Rick, and Bob, WB4SON, put up a temporary 30 foot mast and raised the 20-meter dipole up in the air at Monsignor Clarke School today.  (Actually John and Rick did most of the work, WB4SON just stood around looking useless and taking photos).

We have applied for a club call sign of K1MCS, and it looks like it will be issued on October 20th.  Our first day of contest operation will be on October 21st.  Twenty one students will be participating on the air.  Our plan is to rotate them on the air in groups of four every 45 minutes on Wed/Thu/Fri.

Hopefully after this introduction to Amateur Radio, the same kids will agree to do it again in February, after which we will start having 90 minutes of instruction each week until June — with a goal of getting them all licensed.

This is the fourth school that NCRC has worked with for educational outreach.

NCRC Spreads Education Outreach to West Bay

NCRC is teaching a class in Foster RI, on the “other” side of the bay, as part of our education outreach program.  The class has 25 students, a mix of regional Fire Chiefs, CERT Team members, and lay people from the NW part of the state and into nearby CT.

This is the largest class ever taught by NCRC, and it proves that there is demand for Amateur Radio Education throughout the state.

“Maker” Movement in RI

Mike Cullen, K1NPT, gave a wonderful presentation at last night’s meeting on the Maker Movement in Rhode Island.  He described what they are doing, where they are meeting, and various fairs and conventions.  More importantly to hams, he illustrated how effective he and others have been at making Ham Radio relevant to youth today by showing how it relates to the popular Maker Movement.  As a bonus, without the Makers even realizing it, they are becoming part of a growing STEAM culture within the state.

You can see a copy of Mike’s presentation here.

NCRC Meeting, Monday, Sept 14, KVH @ 7 PM

Our regular meeting will be held on Monday at 7 PM, at KVH.

In addition to our regular short business meeting, we will have a presentation by Mike Cullen, K1NPT, on Rhode Island’s rapidly growing Maker Movement (think home-brew electronics or mechanical systems) and the opportunities to make ham radio an integral part of that and STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
