Congratulations to Presential Scholar KC1KUF

Congratulations go out to NCRC member Ryan KC1KUF, who earned the distinction of United States Presidential Scholar as a graduating senior from North Kingstown High School.

Ryan is a long-time member of NCRC who earned his Technician license at age 13, and went on to earn his General license.  Besides his obvious interest in Amateur Radio, Ryan has been a congressional page at the Rhode Island state house and has become the youngest person to author and introduce a bill (already approved by the House).

With his accomplishments, Ryan has been able to pick from many colleges, and has decided to enter Roger Williams’s 3 + 3 program in the fall, majoring in Political Science and hoping to obtain his Jurisprudence degree.

Menu has changed

In response to multiple requests to simplify things, the menu system has been simplified.

All activities and the club calendar have now been combined into a single tab called “Activities” – so you will find ARTEN, JOTA, Field Day, Net, etc info on that page.

The Members tab will undergo further changes but for now all documentation, minutes, reports, can be found there, along with For Sale items.

All Contact Us and About Us information has been consolidated and now appears on the main page (Newport County Radio Club), along with the club History.

April 2024 meeting location message from the President

I encourage you to attend this month’s meeting in person.  Directions from Portsmouth to the Bristol Train of Artillery (BTA) and some parking locations were sent by email.  The building has a set of stairs to get into the hall and is not handicapped accessible.  Please use the Zoom option if the stairs prevent you from attending.

Doors will be open at 6 PM, please join us for some social time.  Coffee and water will be available during the meeting.
Willy and panel will give us a short History on Newport County Radio Club following our meeting.
I look forward to seeing you there or on the Zoom!
73, John, KC1KOO

Changes to POTA Naming Conventions

The POTA program has been in the process of changing all park prefixes from their original format to a new format that follows the ISO standard for naming entities.  On March 20, 2024, parks in the US will change from being listed as “K-xxxxx” to “US-xxxxx” (the K changes to US).

Changes for other countries have either already taken place or will take place soon. For example, The Bahamas used to begin with C6, and is now BS.

Keep in mind that there never has been a requirement to transmit your park information, not even if you are doing a park-to-park contact.  All of that is automatically handled when logs are uploaded.  But you will certainly see these changes on the POTA spotting network, and will likely hear them on the air soon.  Just remember to send “US” starting March 20th!!!
