Hands On Radio Event: SDR Workshop May 30th

NCRC is holding its fourth Hands On Radio event on May 30th from 6 PM to 8 PM at All Saints STEAM Academy, 915 W Main RD, Middletown RI

This event will focus on how inexpensive USB software-defined radio dongles (<$30) can be coupled with Matlab Simulink software running on a PC to demodulate various radio signals.

Com Volunteers Needed for May 6 Hurricane Awareness Tour

As many of you know, the National Weather Service is hosting a Hurricane Awareness Tour that is coming to RI, at Quonset Point Airfield on Monday May 6th… Our membership, will provide communications support for the first Hurricane Awareness Tour to visit New England in 11 yrs.

We need as many volunteers as we can muster. Tasks include making contact with the National Hurricane Center on HF, guiding visitors to planes, to exhibits, controlling flow of visitors through the demonstrations, and at least one net control station for VHF. We will have at least one VHF Station set up for local communications, and one HF Station set up for comms with the NHC

We need volunteers to arrive at AT 8AM. Bring your HT.

We are seeking as many members as we can muster. I realize this is a weekday, and many of us work. But I do hope we can get a good number of you to support this event.

Contact Paul N1PSX (N1PSX@arrl.org) with your availability…

Thank you on behalf of RI ARES

Congrats KA1BQP and WB4SON

Two NCRC members, Matt KA1BQP and Bob WB4SON, participated in the April 2019 ARRL Frequency Measuring Test (FMT).  Both had results in the “Green Band”, along with 72 others out of the 112 global participants.  For this FMT, Green Band was better than 1 Hz accuracy. Matt and Bob turned in readings about 1/3 of that.

At these levels of precision, Doppler due to a constantly changing ionosphere becomes a major factor in off-the-air HF measurements, and can eat up most of the allowable error.

FMT April 12

It’s spring, so it must be time for another Frequency Measuring Test (FMT).  Here’s the ARRL Announcement from the April 2019 QST (Note: This is actually 10 PM EDT on THURSDAY):

A few NCRC members have been known to participate in the FMT in the past.

Meeting Reminder: Monday April 8, 7PM KVH

The second Monday of the month is just a few days away and that means it’s time for a NCRC meeting:  Monday April 8, 7:00 PM at KVH Manufacturing (75 Enterprise Drive, Middletown).

Following a short business meeting, we will be having a presentation on the Titanic Radios given by Mark Rudd, as well as an introduction to the upcoming Hands On Radio event in May on Software Defined Radios (SDR) by Paul K1YBE.

See everyone Monday!
